One Fighting Championship Set To Revisit the Glory Days of Japanese MMA

There was a time when Japanese MMA ruled the world. In 2002 over 90,000 people packed into the Tokyo Stadium to see the likes of Royce Gracie, Wanderlei Silva and Mirko Crocop do battle at Pride 'Shockwave'.

In recent years Japanese MMA has been in almost constan decline with Pride purchased by the UFC and disbanded while the fighters who first made a name for themselves fighting in Japan have almost all moved West to be snapped up by eager American promotions.

Dream still hold regular events in Japan but this promotion has chosen to follow the UFC model, adopting unified rules, a cage and shorter rounds. In the glory days of Japanese MMA the rules were much more relaxed and this is one of the reasons why MMA fans have such fond memories of the Pride era.

All the talk in the Asian MMA world recently has been of One Fighting Championship, a brand new promotion in Singapore which has plans to put on shows in Tokyo and will feature some former Pride fighters and, more importantly for fight fans, many of the Pride rules.

One Fighting Championship CEO / Owner Victor Cui believest that the rules, which allow stomps and kicks to a grounded opponent, will make for much more entertaining, fan friendly fights,

"I just want to put on exciting fights that MMA fans want to see. I want KOs and submissions. I want real action. I want to see the purity of MMA, with stomps and soccer kicks and elbows.”

As well as featuring many of the rules from Pride One Fighting Championship's first show, which takes place at the 12,000 capacity Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 3rd, will also showcase a number of mixed martial artists who made their reputation fighting in Japan.

Ole Laursen will be up against fellow Filipino Eduard Folayang in the main event. Laursen's first two fights were both in Tokyo in 2004, against Japanese MMA legends Genki Sudo and Caol Uno. The co-main event features two faces who will be all too familiar to MMA fans in Japan. Phil Baroni enjoyed an extremely successful spell in Pride, winning four out of six fights while Yoshiyuki Yoshida is one of very few Japanese fighters to have made it into the UFC.

Baroni is taking on Yoshida in an eagerly awaited welterweight bout which many feel will be the fight of the night. Baroni holds a win over Ikuhisa Minowa with stomps at Pride Bushido 7, this would be illegal under the unified rules but will be 100% legal at One Fighting Championship. Yoshida, who is from Tokyo, is a fourth degree black belt Judoka and Cage Force Tournament champion and with both men coming off recent wins this promises to be a truly explosive contest.

No Japanese MMA show would be complete without a Gracie on the card. Rickson, Renzo and Royce all forged legendary reputations fighting in Japan and the new generation of Gracies will be represented at One Fighting Championship in the shape of Gregor Gracie. He has a 5-1 professional record and will be fighting in Asia for the very first time.

The show will be being broadcast to 24 countries across Asia by ESPN Star Sports and is also being shown on domestic TV in Singapore giving it a wider viewing audience than Pride ever had. It is also being streamed live on the internet by leading MMA website Sherdog meaning that people all over Japan will be watching Yoshida fight.

While all over the world MMA promotions are sticking to the same formula One Fighting Championship is daring to be different by using the set of rules which once made Pride so popular. The first Tokyo show is not scheduled to take place until 2012 but the spirit of Japanese MMA will be alive and well in Singapore on September 3rd.

ValeTudo.ru: What can you say concerning loud statements about you made by Alexander Emelianenko?

When I read his interview I laughed out loud. Although he is 30 years old and that’s certainly not the reason for laughter. Firstly, for guys like Alex I am not Serezha but Sergei Valeryevich. Secondly, it’s about time for him to learn how to compress thoughts and, above all, to think before he speaks. He didn’t get a proper upbringing, I guess, but I don’t want to go deeper in it – he doesn’t deserve so much honor. He is a great trash-talker but real fighters prove their strength in the ring.

Alex is a drunker, he is always brawling. Normal man like me or Fedor would never drink to alcoholic mania and fight in the street. But I often hear about Alex getting into scrape like this in different corners of our country. He rampages, harasses the waitresses and other girls, lies, cries on every corner that he is a champion of the world and the strongest man on Earth. I guess, this is some kind of a drug effect.

ValeTudo.ru : How did you met Alexander?

I came to Stariy Oskol to Fedor. Drunken Alex met me there. When taxi driver took us to the place Alex swatted his shoulder, said: “You drove the good people, thank you” and didn’t want to pay him. I wanted to pay by myself but Alex didn’t let me to do it. He asked me not to tell Fedor about it so I just went away, didn’t want to look at it. After that case I realized what kind of man he was.

ValeTudo.ru : Is it true that he is not allowed to fight abroad because of medical condition? The rumors are...

All organizations in the world know about his hepatitis C and nobody wants to have business with him. He has drunk himself into this disease. He is drug addicted alcoholic and criminal. All his disrespectful remarks to the athletes are just a bullshit. How can he fight with hepatitis? Nobody gonna take him to any tournament. He lies that he hasn’t been to prison but it’s not true, he has.

ValeTudo.ru: What do you know about his business today?

I know that for the present moment Alex doesn’t have neither house nor home. He has spend everything on drink. He doesn’t have a flat, doesn’t have a car. And the only way to make some money for him is to give a scandalous interview and to attract some attention to his person. He is ready for everything to get the bout. He even came to Fedor’s camp with the hope that Fedor would help him to organize a fight somewhere. But he is washed-up.

ValeTudo.ru: Do you believe that prison has an influence on him?

I know some people that have been to prison, they reformed, realized their mistakes and improved. Alex hasn’t changed at all. He stayed the same. There were some cases when he could get to jail but Fedor stepped in again. There were also some cases when Fedor literally saved his life. Being honest, prison is the best place for Alex. Fedor made a great push to take him out of a jail as early as possible. I remember 2002 when Fedor said “I’d like Alex to get out of jail somewhat quicker”. Fedor is the reason why Alexander is free now. Actually he owes his brother everything he has at the present moment. Fedor carries him on his shoulders. Fedor gave him an opportunity to step in the ring, to make some money. He used to make good money because of his last name but he could not keep it, swapped everything for drink and parties.

He is likely to give that interview being drunk and drugget-out. You can see it by his voice in his interview about Fedor’s trainers - he was inadequate. He’s gonna be 30 in 2 days, this error was born on August 2nd, day of airborne troops, my holiday. And he is still living from one drunken feast to another, from one scuffle to another. He must be missing the jail.

ValeTudo.ru : Tell us please about your fight with him in PRIDE.

- Our managers offered him this fight twice but he refused. And when I injured my shoulder he gave his agreement immediately. I was not afraid and entered the ring in 1.5 month after taking off a plaster cast. I was not strong enough at that time. After the bout I came to Yeakaterinburg, he fought for “Dinamo”, I fought for airborne troops, we had to meet in the ring, my injury started to heal. But Alex just didn’t come to revanche by some reason. And now, when the whole world know about his health problems, he tries to wage everyone. I don’t have any wish to communicate with the man of such low level. I don’t even want to see him. He talked trash about Fedor’s trainers. He supposes Fedor will praise him and will take his side. Fedor is not a fool and there is a possibility he will break the relations with Alex. He will probably communicate with him occasionally, Alex is his brother, his blood after all, otherwise Fedor would send him to hell.

ValeTudo.ru: AE said that Fedor took you to MMA. Was it so?

I came to sport in the age of 10 or 11. Before I met Fedor I was hand-to-hand fighting champion of armed forces, hand-to-hand fighting champion of Russia, fought in octagon. I am very thankful to Fedor – I used to train with him and learned much from him but I also believe Fedor learned much from me too, it was a both-side process. His main quality is commitment and persistence.

ValeTudo.ru : Did you train with Alexander?

He came to our gym in about a month since he went at large and Fedor asked me not to punch Alex too strong. And after it Alex said in his interview that he had taught me how to punch. What can a criminal teach you in a month after prison?

ValeTudo.ru : Do you think there’s a risk for Fedor to be infected when he trains with Alexander?

It’s just not comfortable for Fedor to turn his brother down. The only way Alex can knock somebody out now is the smell of an alcohol from his mouth.

I don’t think it was a good idea to take Alex to the camp. His comment “We were hanging out in Kislovodsk for three weeks” means that he distracted Fedor from training process.

And he always says «We» in his interviews. Who are those “we”? Fedor will get a lot of respect regardless of number of his losses. He is a respectful athlete and worthy person. Concerning Alex I can say that he is the reason why our relations with Fedor became worth. We’ve drifted apart. It would be a great pleasure for me to come to Kislovodsk and train with Fedor but Alexnader’s presence there makes it impossible.

Я вот думаю почему бы туда не отправиться нашим бойцам: Нурмагомедов, Исаев, Василевский и др. полюбас там шороху навели бы. Победы в этой организации могут дать нормальные рейтинги и известность, первые 2-3 шоу в любом случае много народу будет смотреть. Что же менеджеры дремлют?

Парадокс вот в чем. Не будь Федора в турнире СФ, не было бы трансляций турнира в России в прямом эфире. И никто бы так широко не знал про Сергея. М-1 продвинула Сергея, ведь это она принесла контракт на трансляции на Россию 2.
